Geotechnical and Seismic Safety Components, Town of Los Gatos General Plan Update; prepared for Robert Bein, William Frost, and Associates, San Jose, California.

Nolan Associates prepared the geotechnical hazards and seismic safety sections for the Town of Los Gatos general plan update EIR and provided policy recommendations for the general plan. The project considered public safety issues related to landsliding, earthquakes, active faulting , soil settlement, soil liquefaction, and geotechnical properties of soils that could adversely impact development.

 

Geotechnical and Seismic Safety Components, City of Marina General Plan Update; prepared for Thos. Cooke Associates, Oakland, California.

Nolan Associates prepared the geotechnical hazards and seismic safety sections for the City of Marina general plan update EIR and provided policy recommendations for the general plan. The project considered safety and hazards issues related to landsliding, earthquakes, active faulting , soil settlement and soil liquefaction, coastal bluff retreat, and geotechnical properties of soils that could adversely impact development. Our involvement in the project resulted in significant revision of previous planning level geologic and geotechnical hazards evaluations based on more recent data and research findings.

Geology, Soils and Hydrologic Constraints Analysis, Pogonip Environmental Constraints Analysis, City of Santa Cruz Parks and Recreation Department, Santa Cruz County, California; prepared for Habitat Restoration Group, Felton, California.

Nolan Associates prepared an updated geologic map for the Pogonip property based on a review of prior geologic maps and reports for the area in conjunction with geologic mapping and field reconnaissance on the property. The revised geologic map was used as a basis for preparing the geologic, soils and hydrologic constraints map for the project and for developing specific components of the project plan.

Groundwater Impacts Analysis, Proposed Campground and Environmental Education Center, Wilder Creek Quarry, Santa Cruz County, California. Prepared for Strelow Environmental Analysis and Planning, Santa Cruz, California.

Nolan Associates analyzed the potential impacts on groundwater quality and quantity for conversion of an existing sand quarry into a state park campground, to include 395 individual campsites for tents and recreational vehicles, a restaurant, pool, equestrian center, group camping facilities, environmental school, and park residences and facilities. Project plans included construction of septic leachfield system to handle sewage for the development and use of local wells for the project water supply.

Geologic and Hydrologic Impact Assessment, Moss Landing Marine Laboratories Earthquake Replacement, Moss Landing, Monterey County, California; review prepared at the request of Jones and Stokes, EIR consultants, Sacramento, California.

Nolan Associates provided technical review of existing geologic/ geotechnical reports and project impacts analysis for the proposed reconstruction of the Moss Landing Marine Laboratory, a facility of the California State University system. The project consists of an approximately 60,000 square foot oceanfront marine science research facility intended to replace an older laboratory that was destroyed by the Loma Prieta earthquake. Our review and impacts analysis was intended to serve as a technical appendix for the project environmental impact statement.

Geologic Impact Assessment, Geologic Hazards Investigation, Proposed September Ranch Subdivision, Monterey County, California; review prepared at the request of Denise Duffy and Associates, EIR consultants, Monterey, California.

Nolan Associates performed impact analysis as part of a technical review of four geologic/ geotechnical reports prepared in support of the proposed residential subdivision of a 900-acre parcel located in the hills bordering the northern flank of Carmel Valley. Our review resulted in substantial additional geologic and geotechnical investigations by the applicant to bring the project into compliance with CEQA requirements. Our report was incorporated into the EIR as a technical appendix.

Geologic Impact Assessment, Geologic Hazards and Preliminary Geotechnical Investigation, Santa Lucia Preserve, Monterey County, California; review prepared at the request of Jones and Stokes, EIR consultants, Sacramento, California.

Nolan Associates provided an impacts analysis and technical review of geologic and geotechnical reports prepared in support of a proposed 300+ lot residential subdivision of a 20,000- acre ranch in the northern Santa Lucia Mountains, south of the Carmel Valley, Monterey County. This controversial subdivision was sited in an area with several potentially active faults and landslide complexes that required careful hazard evaluation. Our review served as a technical appendix for the project environmental impact statement.

Geologic Hazards and Engineering Geologic Evaluation, Proposed Aromas-San Juan Bautista High School, San Juan Bautista, San Benito County, California, Strelow Consulting, Santa Cruz, California.

Nolan Associates performed geologic hazards and engineering geologic evaluation of three prospective sites for a proposed Aromas-San Juan Bautista School District high school. The study was used as the basis for the Environmental Impact Report's analysis of the prospective sites and site-specific recommendations for geotechnical investigations.

Geologic Impacts Analysis, Geologic Hazards Evaluation, and Geotechnical Report, Proposed City of Gilroy Golf Course, City of Gilroy, Santa Clara County, California; prepared for Robert Bein, William Frost, and Associates, San Jose, California.

Nolan Associates provided a preliminary geologic and geotechnical design report for the project based on a conceptual development plan provided by the golf course designer. These technical reports were used as a basis for developing the geology, soils, and groundwater impacts analysis for the project EIR. The geologic and geotechnical investigations included an earthquake safety analysis for an existing earth fill dam at the site, a fault activity investigation of a possible splay of the Carnadero fault, slope stability hazard evaluations, design studies to support development of the golf course infrastructure and related facilities such as the club house, and preliminary design recommendations for associated residential development.

Activity Evaluation of the Los Bajos Fault, Point Fortin, Trinidad, West Indies, Proposed LNG Terminal for the Island of Trinidad, West Indies.

Geologic trenching and activity evaluation of the Los Bajos Fault, a major strike slip fault in Trinidad, as part of a seismic safety evaluation for a proposed liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipping terminal to be located on the island. For Dames and Moore, geotechnical consultants, San Francisco, CA.

Movement History Analysis of Holocene Age, Co-seismic Fissure Systems in the Santa Cruz Mountains, Santa Cruz County, California, for the Technical Advisory Group on the Santa Cruz Geologic Hazard Investigation.

Paleoseismic (trenching) study of a seismically triggered ridge-top fissure system in the Santa Cruz Mountains following the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. The study was intended to determine frequency of movement for co-seismic ridge top fissures in order to evaluate the risk posed to structures. Funded by the United States Army Corps of Engineers as part of a program to evaluate geologic hazards in the Santa Cruz Mountains following the earthquake.

Paleoseismic Investigation of the Serra Fault, San Bruno, San Francisco Peninsula, California

Paleoseismic (trenching) studies on the Serra fault, part of the family of west dipping reverse faults that comprise the Peninsula Fold and Thrust Belt (PFTB). The purpose of the project was to evaluate the earthquake potential of the fault for local land use and emergency response planning and to shed light on the structural and tectonic significance of the PFTB faults. Funded by the US Geological Survey Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program, Award #1434-95-G-2549.
